Putting screen time in perspective

Daily screen time is reported in hours and minutes, which is a number small enough to dismiss. Annualising it turns the same figure into waking days, and that is usually the version that changes behaviour.

How it works

  • Multiplies daily hours by 365 to get annual hours, then converts to full days and to waking days.
  • Expresses the total as a percentage of waking life, assuming roughly 16 waking hours a day.
  • Shows what a one-hour daily reduction would return to you over a year.
annual hours = daily hours × 365
full days    = annual hours ÷ 24
waking days  = annual hours ÷ 16
share of waking life = daily hours ÷ 16

Worked example

A daily average of 4 hours 30 minutes — close to the reported average for adults in many countries.

  1. 4.5 × 365 = 1,642 hours per year
  2. 1,642 ÷ 24 = 68 full days
  3. 1,642 ÷ 16 = 103 waking days
  4. 4.5 ÷ 16 = 28% of waking life

Over 100 waking days a year — about three and a half months of your conscious life. Cutting 30 minutes a day returns 11 waking days annually.

Reading the result

  • Not all screen time is equivalent. Work, a video call with family and passive scrolling all register identically on a device report but differ completely in what they cost you. Separate them before drawing conclusions.
  • Device reports undercount. They typically miss a work computer, a television, and a games console, so the figure you start from is usually lower than reality.
  • The comparison that matters is against your own intentions, not against an average. If you had said you would spend 30 minutes and it was 3 hours, the gap is the finding — the absolute number is not.
  • Screen time in the hour before bed is worth measuring separately, since its effect on sleep is disproportionate to its share of the total.

Common questions

What counts as a reasonable amount?
There is no clinically established threshold for adults. The useful question is not how many hours but whether the time is displacing sleep, exercise or people you would rather be with — which is a question a calculator cannot answer for you.
Why does the annual figure feel so much larger?
Because a daily number is compared against a day and an annual number against a life. Both are the same quantity; the second framing simply makes the trade-off visible in units you actually care about.
