Why is sleep important?

Sleep is fundamental for physical and mental health. During sleep, the body regenerates, repairs tissues, strengthens the immune system, and processes information collected during the day. Sleep deprivation increases the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and impairs concentration. Adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night, but sleep quality is as important as quantity. Sleep benefits the entire body - from brain to metabolism.

Sleep stages

  • Light sleep (N1 and N2) - transitional phase, easy waking, body relaxes
  • Deep sleep (N3) - recovery phase, growth hormone increases, tissue repair
  • REM sleep - paradoxical sleep phase, dreaming, memory consolidation

Sleep hygiene

To improve sleep quality, maintain a regular sleep schedule (going to bed and waking up at the same time), avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed, limit blue light exposure in the evening, ensure a cool and dark sleeping environment, and exercise regularly (but not right before bed). Also, use the bed only for sleep - not for work or watching TV.

Sleep disorders

The most common sleep disorders are insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep), sleep apnea (breathing interruptions during sleep), and restless leg syndrome. If you have sleep problems regularly for more than 3 months, consult a doctor. Professional help can significantly improve quality of life. Remember, chronic sleep deprivation has serious health consequences.

Six hours can leave you sharper than seven — and why the minute-precision is fiction

Sleep runs in cycles, and waking mid-cycle feels worse than waking at a boundary. Six hours is exactly four cycles; seven hours drops you 60 minutes into the fifth, which is why the longer night can feel like the worse one. But the 90-minute figure everyone quotes is a population average — real cycles run 70 to 120 minutes, so five of them span anywhere from 5.8 to 10.0 hours.

Worked example

A 07:00 alarm, planned back to each boundary.

  1. 4 cycles → lights out 00:45, 6.0 h asleep
  2. 5 cycles → lights out 23:15, 7.5 h asleep
  3. 6 cycles → lights out 21:45, 9.0 h asleep
  4. 7.0 h of sleep = 4.67 cycles — 60 minutes into cycle five
  5. at a 70–120 min cycle, five cycles is anywhere from 5.8 to 10.0 h

Six hours lands on a boundary and seven does not, which is the whole reason the shorter night can feel better. The last line is the honest caveat: the spread across plausible cycle lengths is wider than the gap you are trying to optimise.

Reading the result

  • Total sleep still matters more than boundary timing. Most adults need 7–9 hours, and repeatedly choosing 6 because it divides neatly is trading a real deficit for a marginal effect on how one morning feels.
  • Cycles are not uniform through the night. Deep sleep dominates early cycles and REM dominates later ones, so the fifth cycle is not interchangeable with the first — cutting the night short removes mostly REM.
  • Onset latency varies more than the calculation admits. Fifteen minutes is typical, but stress, caffeine, screens and an irregular schedule move it substantially, and any error there shifts every boundary by the same amount.
  • Consistency beats arithmetic. A fixed wake time seven days a week does more for how mornings feel than any bedtime computed to the minute, because it stabilises the circadian timing the cycles hang off.

Common questions

Should I really sleep less to hit a cycle boundary?
Almost never. If the choice is 6.0 versus 7.5 hours, take 7.5. The boundary effect is real but small, and chronic short sleep carries costs that dwarf it. The calculation is for choosing a bedtime, not for justifying a shorter night.
Why does more sleep sometimes feel worse?
Because you probably woke mid-cycle, most likely out of deep sleep, which produces grogginess that can last 30 minutes or more. Seven hours puts you an hour into the fifth cycle; six or seven and a half land on boundaries.
