Why is water important?

Water makes up about 60% of an adult's body weight and is essential for all life processes. It regulates body temperature, transports nutrients and oxygen to cells, supports digestion, lubricates joints, and protects internal organs. Proper hydration improves concentration, mood, and physical performance. Even mild dehydration (1-2% body weight) can cause headaches, fatigue, and reduced productivity.

Daily water needs

  • Adults - about 30-35 ml per kg of body weight
  • Physical activity - additional 250-500 ml per hour of exercise
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding - increased needs by 300-700 ml
  • Hot climate - increased needs due to sweating

Signs of dehydration

Early signs of dehydration include: thirst, dark urine, dry mouth, fatigue, and headaches. Severe dehydration causes dizziness, dry skin, reduced urine output, and rapid heartbeat. Dehydration can be dangerous, especially for children, elderly, and ill people. On hot days and during physical activity, drink regularly without waiting for thirst.

How to drink more water?

Carry a water bottle and drink regularly throughout the day. You can add lemon slices, cucumber, or mint for flavor. Eat fruits and vegetables with high water content (watermelon, cucumber, oranges). Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which have diuretic effects. Drink more before, during, and after physical activity. Start your day with a glass of water right after waking up.

The official 2 litres already includes what you eat

European reference values put adequate total water at 2.0 litres a day for women and 2.5 for men. The word doing the work is total: food supplies roughly a fifth of it. Read the figure as a drinking target and you have quietly added several hundred millilitres that were never asked for.

How it works

  • Starts from published adequate-intake reference values rather than folklore.
  • Separates total water from water you actually have to drink, which is the distinction that gets lost.
  • Adjusts for body mass, activity and heat, none of which the flat figures account for.

Worked example

Comparing the familiar rules against the reference values.

  1. the 8×8 rule is 64 fl oz = 1.89 L
  2. reference total for a woman is 2.0 L, of which food gives about 0.4 L
  3. so the drinking target is about 1.6 L
  4. for a man: 2.5 L total, about 2.0 L to drink
  5. by mass, a 70 kg adult lands at 2.1–2.5 L total

The 8×8 rule at 1.89 L is close to a man's drinking target and above a woman's — but only if it is not stacked on top of food. Treated as additional, it overshoots by roughly a fifth.

Reading the result

  • The 8×8 rule has no identifiable source in the research literature. It is a persistent piece of folklore that happens to land near a plausible number, which is why it survives.
  • Exercise and heat change the figure far more than body mass does. An hour of hard training in warm conditions can add a litre or more, and that loss is worth replacing deliberately rather than by rule.
  • Tea, coffee, milk and soft drinks all count toward intake. The idea that caffeinated drinks are net dehydrating does not hold at normal consumption — the fluid outweighs the modest diuretic effect.
  • Thirst is a reliable guide for most healthy adults, and pale straw-coloured urine is a decent check. Older adults have a blunted thirst response, and some conditions and medications change requirements substantially — those are cases for a clinician, not a calculator.

Common questions

Do I need eight glasses of water a day?
Not as a rule. Reference values describe total water of 2.0–2.5 litres including food, which works out at roughly 1.6–2.0 litres to drink. Eight glasses is close to that range by coincidence rather than by evidence.
Does coffee count?
Yes. At ordinary intakes the water in coffee and tea more than offsets their diuretic effect, so they contribute to your total. The stronger reason to moderate them is caffeine, not hydration.
