Guide to Blood Donation

Why donate blood?

Donating blood is one of the simplest ways to save a life. One unit of blood can help three people, and demand for blood is constant in hospitals and clinics. Blood cannot be produced artificially, so the only source is voluntary donors. Regular blood donation is safe for healthy adults and can take 45 to 60 minutes. Your body regenerates donated blood within a few weeks, and you gain the satisfaction of helping others.

Eligibility criteria

To become a blood donor, you must meet specific conditions: be between 18 and 65 years old, weigh at least 50 kg, and be healthy. Contraindications include certain chronic diseases, taking certain medications, recent surgeries, and risky sexual behaviors. Before donating, a medical interview and hemoglobin level check are conducted. It's important to be well-hydrated and eat a light meal before your visit.

Types of blood donation

The most common donation is whole blood, which is collected in one draw and can be used in various ways. You can also donate specific blood components: plasma (plasmapheresis), platelets (plateletpheresis), or red blood cells (erythrocytapheresis). Each method helps specific patients with particular needs. Donation frequency depends on type - whole blood can be donated every 8 weeks (women every 12 weeks), and platelets even every 2 weeks.

Benefits for the donor

Blood donation also has benefits for the donor. Regular donation can lower iron levels in the blood, which is beneficial for people with elevated ferritin levels. Additionally, each donation includes a free check-up: hemoglobin levels, blood pressure are checked, and screening tests for viruses are performed. Donors also receive an identification card with their blood type, which can be useful in the future.

Preparing for donation

Before donating blood: drink plenty of water (at least 3 glasses), eat light meals rich in protein and iron (avoid fatty foods), get adequate sleep (minimum 6 hours), avoid alcohol 24 hours before donation, and don't smoke at least an hour before your visit. After donation, stay at the collection point for about 15 minutes, drink plenty of water, and avoid intense physical exertion for the rest of the day. If you feel dizzy, lie down with your legs elevated.
